Freedom of the Press 2007 Draft Country Report and Ratings

In a draft report and ratings issued on May 1, Freedom House describes Serbia as a country with partly free media.

“The constitution of the newly independent Serbia, adopted in October 2006, provides for freedom of the press,” the U.S. NGO said in its draft report, adding that despite that, “the government, media owners, local officials, and businessmen continue to place undue pressure on journalists.”

Amnesty International Report 2007

In its annual human rights report released last week, Amnesty International quotes Serbia’s failure to arrest and transfer indicted suspects to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (Tribunal), which led to the suspension of talks on a Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union (EU).

"The Outlook for the Independence of Kosovo"

In a statement before the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns said that the United States fully supported UN Special Kosovo Envoy Martti Ahtisaari's recommendations regarding Kosovo’s future status, adding that supervised independence was viewed to now be the only way forward.

U.S. Department of State Report on Human Rights Practices in Serbia 2006

In its annual report on human rights practices in Serbia, the State Department highlighted numerous problems including widespread corruption in the police and the judiciary, impunity, inefficient and lengthy trials and government’s failure to cooperate with the Hague Tribunal.
