In an interview for the Vienna daily Kurier, he pointed out that 54 million people last year died as a consequence of wars, starvation, contaminated water, or "long vanquished epidemics."

"We live under the dictatorship of the global financial capital," said Ziegler.

"Oligarchs of the 500 largest concerns control 52.8 percent of the world gross social product. This is the kind of power that no king, emperor, or pope possesses. Concerns are not under state control and follow only one strategy - to maximize profit. And today in the US billionaires are in power directly," he said.

He pointed out that, despite the partial progress in reducing poverty, out of the world's 7.3 billion people one billion is still permanently exposed to famine as a result of "a cannibal world order."

When it comes to US President Donald Trump, and his announced reduction in participation in international organizations, Ziegler warned that the US is the largest contributor to the UN with 26 percent of the total budget, i.e., that the country provides 60 percent of the funds for peace missions.

"If Tramp reduces financial participation, the UN will be paralyzed," he said.

At the same time, he said he was convinced that Trump will not remain in office for four years, "as what will come are either psychiatric problems or pressure that will become so great he will not be able to rule."

Ziegler believes that the possible outcomes include Trump's resignation or his impeachment.
