The U.S. president also expressed his satisfaction with the ethnic Albanian authorities' declared readiness to support the right of the Serbs in Kosovo.
"The U.S. will continue to cooperate with her allies to make sure there is no violence," Bush told reporters in Dar es Salaam.
However, he would not directly confirm that a recognition of Kosovo as an independent state will be a part of the foreign policy legacy of his administration.
Instead, the U.S. president said that his country has offered strong support for the Ahtisaari plan envisaging Kosovo's supervised independence, rejected at the UN last spring.
Washington and some major EU countries are expected to recognize the Kosovo Albanians' unilateral secession.
Bush added that he believes it is "in Serbia's interest to follow Europe". He went on to say that "the Serbian people can be sure they have a friend in the United States".

The media and the "Bush bashers" are not speaking the truth! The President is urging all of Serbia to seek it's Independence. The USA IS a friend of Serbia.
Christians helping other Christians in the name of Freedom is not a bad thing.

Thank you Mr. President.
May near future bring many such good friends to you , personally, and to your people. OK, let me retract that - to you personally ONLY . I still believe in the American spirit. Although getting thin here...

The important thing is how some of us will remember Bush in the US. Definitely as a great president, who defended his country's interests and status as the only superpower. You and so many Europeans would of course prefer to see a weak US. The European mentality is formed by jealousy and envy. I had the occasion to learn about it on the French forum of Figaro (It got closed 2 years ago). There most Europeans expressed their ardent desire to see the economic and military collapse of the USA and the rise of the EU as the new superpower. Well you can wait for it a long time. The EU will never be more than a commun market.

There will be no violence but that will have nothing to do with Bush. If given a map I'm sure he wouldn't even know where Serbia lives. He'd probably point to somewhere in Asia.
His comments with other world leaders are here on this BBC [link]
It's interesting to note that no-one is actually congratulating the Albanians.
You even have the leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia now seeking formal independence. And why not? Kosovo sets a precedence!

I challenge bush to show up at a Serbian church in america and repeat what he said. His refusal will prove he is a coward.
(JohnBoy, 17 February 2008 21:28)
Bush, am just counting the days until you finally go, it has been 8 years too much for a world that became totally unsafe thanks to you.
You want to make sure that no violence will break in Kosova, what a joke, are you going to use the same method that you used in Irak!!
Of course you are well surrended by a team of hungry for war, pls spare us with your lessons of democracy and economy, at your place I would be ashame of your achievments, sorry non-achievements and your policy of lies, really "time for change"
You have proven one last time how to neglect the rule of laws and make fun of UN, of course you also were elected illegaly so how can you then make that difference. One thing is sure, you will be remembered as the worst president US ever had!
(The Swiss, 17 February 2008 18:12)
What a clown. I don't know how he can say that with a straight face. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
The important thing for Serbia here is that any redrawing of borders can only happen through the UN. Kosovo remains legally a part of Serbia, and even cowboy George can do nothing about this.
I urge all Serbs everywhere in the world to do their part to never let go Kosovo. Just yesterday I was buying wine and instead of my usual instinct to buy French and Italian brands, I bought Spanish and South African wine. That may seem silly to some, but I am personally going to try to boycott all products from countries wich recognize this illegal and immoral 'greater albania' plan. Slovenian companies who do business in Serbia should be boycotted, as should others. If all Serbs do their part, they will feel it in the pocket book, and that really is the only thing today's America (and its willing servants) care about, is the almighty dollar. They have no sense of morality, ethics, justice, and law any more.
I say Bravo to Kostunica, Tadic and company! They have managed to keep Kosovo in Serbia, to split Europe on this issue, and in fact have most of the world behind them. Kosovo will have no UN seat, will not be able to join international organizations, will not be able to join the EU, will not be able to join FIFA, will never be a recognized state. Under the barrage of anti-Serb lies and propoganda and the immoral American position, and the continual attempts by Germany (who controls Europe unfortunately) to destroy Serbia, this quite an achievement by the Serbian government and they will be written in history books as true heroes.
Now it is time to rebuild Serbia, keep the economy growing, forge closer ties to our true allies, and boycott those who show us no respect. Full control of Kosovo will be ours again when the geopolitical situation in the world changes. If history teaches us anything, it is that empires rise and fall. I doubt we will have to wait 500 years this time.
Cheers!!

Rice made this same point earlier. Same response -- with friends like that who needs enemies?
