Alcaraz triumphed after three hours and 21 minutes - 6:4, 2:6, 7:6(1), 6:3.
The Spaniard won the first Grand Slam title of his career in the first final he played, while Ruud lost his second final, after Roland Garros, to Nadal this year.
Alcaraz (19) became world no.1 and thus made history, as he was the first teenager to do so, and also the youngest ever to do so.
He also made history by breaking the record for the amount of time spent on the court in one Grand Slam, playing more than 23 and a half hours.
- First Grand Slam title - First teenager in ATP history to become World Number 1
Alcaraz is certainly a fine tennis player and perhaps over the next 15 years he will join the greats, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal. Today, however, he is still behind Djokovic and won the flawed US Open only because the best player in the world was banned from the tournament. Perhaps Djokovic will be banned from the Australian Open again. That will Alcaraz the chance to add another fake victory to his CV.

Congratulations to Alcatraz. He might have a very bright future indeed.
JS, He has just begun. Don't get too excited and jinx the guy.

Information coming out from the US on tennis is that it was a very poor showing. Apart from the semi finals and finals the other matches were very poorly attended and its rumoured that tickets were given way so people would be in the strands.
Many have said they refused to watch the US Open since Djokovic was not playing and that is why we have already news from the Australian Open officials declaring he will play in Melbourne.

Thank Christ for that! You know, Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are obviously geniuses, but their monopoly on the game, was making it dull. Hopefully we'll see more winners of slams now. Domination in any sport is never a good thing
