The council will hold consultations in New York this afternoon at the request of Russia, which opposes Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence and its bid for international recognition, the AP reported.

The Security Council's president received the request from Russian diplomats and has scheduled a meeting, said Angelica Jacome, a spokeswoman for the current council president, Panama's U.N. Ambassador Ricardo Arias.

President Boris Tadić's cabinet has confirmed the news in Belgrade today, adding that Tadić will travel to New York to attend the session.

The president today called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to order the UNMIK chief in Kosovo, Joachim Ruecker, to declare Kosovo Albanians' proclamation of independence made today in Priština illegal.

Tadić is also demanding the dissolution of the Kosovo assembly, which adopted the decision, on grounds that it breached Resolution 1244.

In his letter to Ban, the president informed him that Serbia has taken steps to annul the secessionist decisions, his office said.

"The Republic of Serbia is asking all the United Nations members to demonstrate complete respect of Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with their obligations according to international law, the UN Charter, and UN Resolution 1244, and reject the so-called independence of Kosovo," the letter reads.

Serbia thus seeks that the UN secretary-general's special representative in Kosovo undertakes all the necessary measures, in line with 1244, and without delay annul all acts that declare Kosovo's unilateral independence.
