Thanks to the products launched last year, including the swine flu (H1N1) vaccine, Novartis recorded a rise in annual turnover of seven percent, to reach USD 44.2bn.
Last year, the Basel-based company recorded annual growth of net profit of eight percent to USD 10.3bn (EUR 7.3bn), which was considerably more than analysts had anticipated.
Vasella, who has held two top offices at Novartis for 11 years, will give up the post of chief executive officer to Jimenez, to focus on his role as chairman.
Last year, the company enriched its product assortment with a range of products, including in the fields of oncology and immunology.
Serbia is among the countries that bought swine flu vaccines from Novartis, purchasing 857,500 doses, but canceling the rest of the order of a total of three million units.
