BELGRADE -- The session of the Serbian Parliament was briefly interrupted today after an opposition MP threw both her shoes at the deputy speaker.

Čomić previously reprimanded Pop-Lazić and ordered her out, stating that her behavior had damaged the reputation of parliament.
The deputy speaker also instructed security officers "to return the objects that belong to Pop-Lazić".
The incident came during a row over a letter allegedly written by the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), which was read in parliament on Wednesday.
The Church has since denied that its representatives wrote the signed letter.
SRS MP Aleksandar Martinović attempted to explain where he received the information that it was in fact the Synod that stood behind the letter, when the deputy speaker announced he was in breach of the rules of procedure, and cut him off.
Pop-Lazić then took off both her shoes and threw them at Čomić.
The SRS MP told reporters afterwards that she performed "a symbolic gesture of disobedience over the offensive behavior directed at the dignity of MPs".
"This is a legitimate manner of protest of an MP who represents the people, and who is not able to tell parliament what the people think."
Pop-Lazić added that the Radicals disagreed with the manner in which parliament was functioning, since the presiding official has been constantly cautioning the party's lawmakers, and preventing them from speaking.
She went on to say that the Radicals' arguments were strong, and that this in turn caused the chairwoman to behave arrogantly.
Pop-Lazić also said that the shoe-throwing incident was meant to show that SRS stands against a "violent attempt to adopt the unconstitutional Vojvodina statute".
The debate on the statute continued after the recess today.
First, SRS recently polled +9% in a recent survey, ahead of DSS and behind SNS & DS. CHECK B92 archives. Second, I've witnessed Comic repeatedly interupt SRS deputies in parliament. It takes one person to assault another but it takes one person to passive-aggressively provoke the other into escalating the conflict.

Serbian Parliament is reaching the stage of chemical warfare with civilians as legitimate targets.
Though I strongly support political elimination of most of its members from all the parties spectrum, I strongly object any possible damage to interior and exterior of that profoundly beautiful building in the process.

Here's a thought for you: if the elections had gone the wrong way, instead of Jeremic going around the world rallying countries against Kosovo's illegal independence, we could have had these sophisticates representing Serbia. Hardly surprising all the Albanians were desperate for an SRS victory.

Radicals are a league for whom most citizens are too clever to find support from. And I can smell here too, that Radicals are losing backing from their earlier die hard supporters. But nothing seems to lessen their arrogance.
But this news story failed to explain what was is about and in the letter. Not good journalism, I must say.

"This is a legitimate manner of protest of an MP who represents the people, and who is not able to tell parliament what the people think."
Funny. This is not a legitimate manner of protest, it's simply an idiotic behaviour, only making the MP herself (and the party she represents) a laughing stock.
Maybe she tried to imitate it, but she won't get as famous as this Iraqi guy who threw a shoe at Mr.Bush...

THIS is the way that political agendas are achieved- trying to shut down opposition voices....and the DS is becoming very proficient at these methods. It's not good for Serbia, but who cares....voices will be muted and statutes will be "railroaded" through all in the name of "democracy". Such arrogance by Tadic and the ruling coalition. Serbs want Serbia to stay whole and intact....why not LISTEN and represent your constituents instead of forcing them to accept "your plans" for them.

The radicals celebrating the influence of the Ottoman empire on Serbian cultural and political life? Interestinger and interestinger!!

What a ridiculous thing to do. Shoe throwing in Muslim countries bears a particular meaning, but in European countries it just seems like the act of a crazy person.
Plus womens' shoes can be a brutal weapon!
