1. If one can ask the Serbian Government this simple question.
    Do they want 5% of Kosova's land (North of Kosova including Trepca's mine) or 40-50% of land in anywhere else of Kosova?
    I bet my life on it that the answer will be 5%. Thus, this will be enaugh proof to the Serbs, be that in Serbia or in Kosova that Serbian governments is not interested on their well being but on the main mine of Kosova.
    For Serbian Government, Kosovars(Albanians and Serbs) were always a second class citizens. You only have to look at those Kosova's Serbs, born and bred in Kosova, how they are being treated in Serbia now that they left Kosova.

    Kosova will be independent sooner or later with current borders and there is no question about it. This is not just because I like it(just for your info I do like it actually very much so) or whether Serbia mistreated Albanians but because Europe has this strategic plan for ages to make europe even bigger in every sense. By breaking Russia and then Yugoslavia up(which again they should've ages ago if u ask me)and then creating new states with little or no minorities on those new states. By doing that, they push these new states to integrate into new,bigger and stronger Europe.

    Creating new states with little or no minorities in it they are/have automatically eliminated and will eliminate the vast of killings that we have witness for the past century.

    When there will be no ethnic conflict anymore then there is no reason why wouldn't the Europe's boom and be the biggest in the planet, which by the way America doesn't like it but has no choice. In very near future Europe will be stronger than USA even militarily.

    Or hold a sec, am I the only one on this forum to think that all these division, new states, latest wars etc were part of this EU plan? I think I am because there are many posters in this forum who still think that Kosova will never get independent and that Kosova is an internal affair of Serbia.

    Well Kosova, Serbia and whole Balkan is and will be an internal part of Europe for the next 15-20 years or until we(Balkan mentality) will change and look into the future and not into the past.

    Long Live Independent Kosova with its own people(Albanians,Serbs,Turks,Roma's etc) and lets hope Serbia will be Free from its nationalist and their brainwashed views.

  2. Partition makes sense because the Serbs in northern Kosovo simply do not want to live in a state where Pristina calls the shots. Technically, it is relatively easy to carry out, since it is adjacent to the rest of Serbia. Furthermore, politically, it would help Serbia retain some degree of national dignity, yet also pave the way for all Albanians in Kosovo to begin a new life in peace in a new state.

    Partition may make sense, but because roughly half of Kosovo Serbs live south of the Ibar river, it would be foolish to adopt it as an alternative instead of a key point to other wider solutions.

    In terms of policy, a solution encompassing partition should:
    1. require that Kosovo retain its multi-ethnic structure and identity (eg. bilingualism);
    2. require that political structures keep granting a strong voice to minorities in Kosovo (even more than they do now--eg. in the govt bureaucracy);
    3. should discourage any transfers of population and instead encourage the return of refugees;
    4. allow joint citizenship to Serbs and other minorities living in Kosovo as well as to non-Serbs who lived in northern Kosovo and who now live south of the Ibar river (dual nationality could also apply to Presevo Albanians);
    5. require that Kosovo relinquish any claims to the territory of another state (ie Presevo, Tetovo, Ulcinj--here the reasoning would be: Kosovo will have Serbian minorities and vice versa);
    6. require that Kosovo forbid a union with any other state (ie Albania)
    7. of course, promote better admin of justice, national reconciliation, human rights, increased protection of cultural religious landmarks, etc.
    8. guarantee the eternal safe passage of Serbs wishing to visit cultural landmarks in Kosovo.

    I could envision two states but with very porous boundaries characterized by populations with common interests, fluid peaceful interaction, and a future tied to the EU.

  3. When will everyone stop acting like children and be realistic! Kosovo should get independance. Why? The main reason would be that if Srbija believes it to be so important to its history then why would it disrespect that history with such atrocities that were allowed to occur there? If it is so important then why did people have to be imported there to make it so?

    Stop using religion for an excuse, it is blasphemy! Don't forget where you came from and what you have seen and experienced but look towards some kind of better life without always wanting to kill each other and passing that hatred on to your offspring or you can just be tools of the politicians who are more than happy to have disharmony to prove a point.
    The status of Kosovo needs to be brought to a close so that people can start identifying with their new country and let go of but don't forget Srbija and Albania.
    Be responsible adults not narrow minded individuals stuck in the past.
    This is the 21st century, right?

    another one writes about re-unification of Kosovo with Albania...( lili ) ... ? how do you wanna unify something that never belonged together???

    Albanians seem to be the ones, who live in illusions and dreams, that should be clearly said.
    The reason I started writing here, was to exchange with Albanians about different standpoints, views on the matter.
    But by now I am about to loose my hope for reading some sound albanian comments here.

  5. “such as Bosnia, Kosovo, and maybe down the road Montenegro itself”

    Alban, being that I’m Montenegrin I don’t hold any sinister plans for that country. I find it rather amusing that people try to create more conflict between Serbs and Montenegrins than exists in reality. Montenegrins care for Kosovo just as much as Serbs, or are you forgetting such epic poetry as the “Mountain Wreath”? I do think you misunderstand why our Churches are important to me and many other completely secular Serbians. It has 100% absolutely NOTHING to do with it being a house of God in itself. As you know, being Orthodox is what makes a Serb a Serb. If I were to become Catholic, I would magically transform into a Croatian. Therefore for obvious reasons, our ancient churches (the ones that are actually old) represent the very foundation of what makes a Serb a Serb. The comparisons to Jerusalem are many and Kosovo plays a similar role in our belief system, regardless of attempts to portray our well established beliefs as “myth”. So your comparisons to Catholic Churches built by Spain and Portugal are not the same, they do not represent the identity and belief system of those countries. Latin America is not where Spanish identity formed.

    As far as moving them stone by stone to another region, if you had read all of my previous suggestions, you will see that was in fact something I mentioned as a worse case solution. I do applaud you for trying to be part of the solution and not part of the problem by suggestion possible alternatives, and I would appreciate hearing more from you on what you think Albanians could settle for.

    Yes, I’m “nationalistic” in that I care very much for the lands in which Serbians live. I personally believe both Serbs and Albanians should have the right to live in one country. So I do not support anything that I would support for your people as well. I do not advocate violence or force as a solution to anything. I support coming to a majority consensus on any issues in regards to the Right to Self Determination. The Balkans are still a complete mess and the potential for violence there is still great. I do not believe that the Right to Self Determination is an evil movement. Considering that I was publically called a “traitor” on Serbian Television, I do find your comments that I am some sort of evil Serb Nationalist amusing to say the least. I’m only articulating the Serb position using Western style arguments and reason. This is exactly the way such arguments should be framed.

    I’m willing to compromise Alban, what are you willing to compromise on? Please do tell.

    Lets face it, without NATO fighting against Serbia, the Kosovars would last a week, maybe 2 from a full scale assault. The KLA was completley pushed into Albania within 2 weeks in '99.
    I remember Albania complaining that Serb forces even went as far as Albania proper with their offensive and this was WHILE nato was attacking them.

    Typical Serb you are ..read your history and you'll see that generation after generation Serbs have been been land thirsty people
    Albania was not alowed to enter the war by NATO, even forbidin Albania from fiving material help to KLA. However, using full military power and war planes against people armet only with kallashnikovs ...Serbia was in offensive for more than 1 year
    About the comments said by a Czech historian don't carry much weight cos he clearly is on the side of serbia as a slavic person he is. There are plenty of historians which say the truth, but B92 doesn't display their comments.
    In real terms about the North Mitrovica ..Serbia would lose Preshevo, and Vojvodina as well, at the same time they create the opportunity for a claim of indipendence from Albanians in Montenegro and Macedonia. Now think about it

    If Bosnia does in fact turn out to be unviable as this Czech diplomat suggests, partition and unification with Serbia proper may be an option there as well. However, the sticking point will be our religious sites.

    Well my dear Mathew, religious sites, are religious only if there are people attending prayers there. If there are only empty buildings as it is the case in Kosovo, why would that be a sticky point. You don't have any Serbs left around most of this churches, why not dismantle the churches stone by stone and restore them somewhere in Serbia. I have read most of your comments. I congratulate you for your literary well written comments. However, I find most of it as a well written propaganda with an intention to grab land wherever you can (such as Bosnia, Kosovo, and maybe down the road Montenegro itself). The moderation you offer is an ilusion hidden under a deceitful shadow or the eternal Serbian dream of a Great Serbia. I don't think you mean well for Albanians, which is quite expected from the Pro Serbian camp. But, you can't partition someone's land simply because of religios sites. Spain and Portugal have 8% population in every country of Latin America. In addition, all the ancient churches in Latin America were built by colonial forces. So, should they start now asking for partition. You Serbs are being very unreasonable on this issue, and there will never be peace in Ballkans.

  11. Prediction: Russia & China VETO Kosovo's independence. Kosovo is forced to declare unilateral independence illegally. Serbs flew to the North of Kosovo and declare their own independence. Albanians cannot do ANYTHING about it. Serbia declares Kosovo OCCUPIED territory (while STILL having LEGAL sovereignty over Kosovo from the UN) Serbia waits until the time is right (could be 10-100 years) and then takes back Kosovo by force.

The facts are that the Serbs have been driven out of Kosovo for many decades by Albanians who have come into Kosovo illegally in large part and set about on a deliberate land grab. This is nothing other than the basest kind of land theft on the tails of utter bigotry and racism coming from the K-Albanians who have wanted to take over Kosovo since they worked hand in glove with Hitlerm when they failed in that objective. 18. Three options for Kosovo:

    - the Ahtisaari option: an independent Kosovo where in 5 years nearly all Serbs will have left.

    - the forced partition: the North tip is added to Srbia and the remainder becomes independent. Most of the Serbs south of the Ibar will leave.

    - the negotiated partition: the Albanians get Presevo, the Serbs get besides the north tip also Strpce and real autonomy for the Serbs elsewhere in Kosovo - including some own police so that their safety is better guaranteed. As a bonus the Albanians get immediate recognition by Belgrade.

    The last option can only be achieved when the Albanians give up on Ahtisaari and start real negotiations with the Serbs.

  21. Matthew,

    is there any way that we talk further - are you in the US or UK? It would be interesting to discuss points further since I do in fact believe all alternatives must be discussed so that the best solution is found. However, I disagree with any dismemberment of a nation state and Yugoslavia's dismemberment in my view was wrong and not the black white picture the west wish everyone to believe.

    Ideally I would wish the EU embrace the whole of the Western Balkans as a single project and help guide all aspiring states into the EU - surely then all of this becomes irrelevant in many ways!!! This saddly should have been the case for Yugoslavia but what has happened has happened!

    Serbs have a natural claim to their heartland but the reality is that yes we do not populate the region. The ethnic-Albanians have in recent history have been subjegated by the Serbs but so too the Serbs more recently and before Milosevic. In fact the attacks against the ethnic-Albanians were in many cases a predtermined plan as we are all only too aware. Each group can claim victimisation but new walls do not overcome the hatred and mistrust that is essentially required for the economic development of the region - on the contrary it diverts energy and focus is lost!

    Talk of partition only rewards acts of violence either way as one can see some want even more and will not be satisfied but will want more! There are moderates Serbs & ethnic-Albanians on all sides and these people need to be supported to keep the fanatics in check. Serbia had it's fantatic - Milosevic but he is now gone however, the ethnic-Albanians have Ceku who is lacking in credibility given his actions in Krajina and in Kosovo & Metohija. That said the moderates must prevail to allow for the opportunity for win-win to come through where all the poeples of the region can have a better life!

    Pec-Decani to Montenegro;

    Dragas-Brod to Macedonia;

    Gracanica-Lipjan to get Vatican Status.

    The rest to Albania.

    This creates no new economically unviable Balkan statelet, increases the viability of current small states in area, prevents most K.Serbs and cultural sites from being decimated further and, means majority of K.Albanians now live in an Albanian State as is their wish.

    This is nothing new. Many times during the last thousand years different parts of Kosovo have belonged to either different states or different administrative entities of the Ottoman Empire.

  29. There's no good solution anywhere in this. Yes, the advantages of partition are that Serbs and Albanians have their own separate areas to live, and don't have to put up a happy-happy-multiethnic facade for the West. Belgrade saves face and Pristina is not hampered with three municipalities completely out of its control.

    However the downside to this is that two-thirds of the K-Serbs live south of the Ibar, and the real Serbian heartlands of Kosovo are in Gracanica, Decani, Pec, and Prizren (Gracanica being the only area still with a sizable Serb community). If we essentially have partition and population transfer, as like Greece and Turkey in 1923, I fear any Serb community south of the Ibar will not be protected, nor fully represented. The logic from Pristina will be "you have your own Kosovo north of the Ibar. Go there!" Partition also raises the potential issue of Presevo. Will Belgrade agree to a land swap? Will churches and communties in the rest of Kosovo be protected?

    Any solutiion finally agreed upon, or worse imposed, will be painful and involve sacrifices on both sides.

  32. It is clear that the plab put forth by Ahtisaari is bound now for failure given the sudden increase in suggestions on partition but it is not the answer and is not Serbia's goal at all!!!

    I understand the sentiment of partition but that is not the answer as it does not pull down the barriers between all the poeples but forges a new wall at a different point instead - it is still the creation of new borders. True reconciliation can only be gained through the delopment of trust amongst all the poeples of Serbia - no matter what their ethnic background!!!

    I say this because I am always drawn back to the question;

    What difference is there between an ethnic-Albainian from Belgrade, Presevo or where ever else they may live in Serbia over those ethnic-Albanians who live in its province of Kosovo & Metohija ???

    Suggesting partition of Serbia be that 100% of it's province or a portion of KiM and or other regions express little hope for reconciliation for all the poeples of Serbia. It is this that goes directly against all that the US & EU funadmentally stand for. This is in fact fundamentally fascist in nature - that different people cannot live together and is one step from the follow on concept that one ethnic group is superior over the other! Such a scenario as partition of Serbia of any kind does little to Support EU values and goals and is in fact the best principle that Serbia has to protect its integrity territorially and for many worldwide. What is partition suggesting other then mass migrations either side of the new border (wherever it maybe) for all peoples concerned. Moroever it ensures those who are willing to turn to violence are spurred on throughout the world untill of course we have a UN of 10,000+ mini monoethnic states because some people cannot learn to live together in peace and find true alternatives to violence and war!

    REAL TALKS & REAL NEGOTIATIONS are the only way forward to COMPROMISE and over coming barriers that seperate all the peoples of SERBIA as a WHOLE.
