1. 'Eurostat explained that individuals are identified as being at risk of poverty if their equivalized disposable income is less than 60 percent of the national median equivalized disposable income after social transfers have been taken into account.'
I guess that makes the whole article pretty useless. It would be better to meassure different aspects. Like can effort to live alone on 30m2, can buy food, has medical treatments, can go on vacation,... This would blend out the different living standards. Relartive povertry can not be compared between countries.
I know enough that would have to starve or to live on the streets without support from their children. Another problem that comes up (maybe just in my surrounding) is that people were for a long time working without beeing registered so they have problems to get enough years or will have penzions they can not live on. Exactly! Their way of measuring poverty is in relation to the average income of the people in the country. If the people in the country are poor, as long as the elderly are not more than 40% poorer, then they are not in poverty. Even if they barely have enough money to buy food and pay for electricity...

I feel bad for the elderly Brits in poverty, who don't know why they can't go on two African holidays this winter!

  4. So called Western nations pension system is struggling with current living costs. It's been abused by the free loaders that has been invited into the country. People who never have worked and payed a single tax are invited to rort the system thanks to Germany who spear headed this.
In Australia, they want me to work till 70, I was born here. There are many that arrived here on social welfare and are not interested in working but happy with the handouts.
Fantastic Western values at the expense of its citizens.

  5. Not everyone has the definition of poverty.

In many EU countries, impoverished means that an elderly couple can't make both their January trip to Morocco and February excursion to Tunisia.
    (JS, 28 January 2019 15:05)

Which is why the article specifically defined that the criteria for poverty was based on median income and social payments.
So, the only person who read this article and lies that the definition of poverty is associated with trips to Morocco and Tunisia, is the same dimwit who owns three fake farms in Serbia and employs an army of farm workers, none of whom know how to prune vegetation.
