Time that could be used for the development of the local-self governments, bringing investments and combat against corruption, is being wasted on the changes in the ruling structures, they told daily Danas.
The Novi Sad authorities have stated that the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is constantly pressuring the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) to leave the coalition with the DS.
The local self-governments say that this is completely logical because it would ensure good ties with Belgrade and secure development and projects in those municipalities in towns.
Paraćin Mayor Paunović told Danas that changes in the local ruling structures would not bring any good results, which was proven in the last Serbian government’s mandate.
“Even though it is legitimate, I don’t think it is useful. For example the DS did this in its last mandate and it lost the election. Citizens usually remember unsuccessful or unnecessary changes in local coalitions,” he explained.
Inđija Mayor Ješić told the daily that the situation in the town was “stable” but that there was always a possibility that changes could happen.
“The whole idea stems from two things – a catastrophic constitutional framework and the decision of the Constitutional Court of Serbia that councilors and MPs own their mandates,” he explained.
According to Ješić, the worst thing is the fact that the local authorities spend four years trying to preserve their power instead of working on investments and combat against corruption.
Serbian Prime Minister and SPS leader Ivica Dačić has announced that the new ruling coalition will work on changing the local ruling structures, especially in Novi Sad where the DS and SPS had formed a coalition.
United Regions of Serbia (URS) leader and Finance and Economy Minister Mlađan Dinkić and SNS acting leader and Defense Minister Aleksandar Vučić have also mentioned that it is possible that the local authorities will change.
