"The long-delayed vote was 97-2 in favor of Montenegro's accession," Reuters reported.

The agency said last week that US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson "wrote to the leaders of the Senate this month to say Montenegro's membership in NATO was strongly in the interests of the United States" and that their approval was needed before the alliance's May summit.

After the Senate vote, the issue will be forwarded to the White House so that US President Donald Trump can sign the decision.

"There was no immediate confirmation of whether President Donald Trump would formally deposit the instrument of ratification," Reuters said, noting, however, that his administration has "supported NATO membership for the tiny Balkan nation."
