A car bomb has exploded near the headquarters of the Basque television station, EITB, in the northern Spanish town of Bilbao.

The complex, which houses not only EITB but the regional base of another TV station, a hospital and a college, had been evacuated after a warning in the name of the Basque separatist group ETA. No one has been injured.

Emergency services found a suspect vehicle shortly after closing off the area. A short time later they found the owner of the van tied up, not far from Bilbao.

Although there were no casualties this time, if it had not been for the warning the situation could have been vastly different.

Almost exactly two years ago, ETA planted a bomb at Madrid airport that killed two people.

ETA has killed more than 800 people during its 40-year struggle for an independent Basque state.
