The Awami league has taken three-quarters of the 300 parliamentary seats.

A rival group, led by another former prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, only won 31 seats. The two have alternated in power for two decades.

Bangladesh has been under emergency rule, imposed by an army-backed government, for two years. Chronic political and social unrest prompted the military to intervene.

Political confrontations, strikes and street violence have often hampered the effectiveness of Bangladeshi governments.
