Mladic was arrested in May 2011 after spending years of hiding. The trial before the tribunal in The Hague started in a year later.

He is charged with genocide in Srebrenica, persecution of Muslims and Croats throughout Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), that had proportions of genocide
in seven municipalities, as well as of terrorizing the population of Sarajevo by artillery and sniping attacks, and taking members of UNPROFOR as hostages, in the period between 1992 and 1995.

In two counts of the indictment, General Mladic is charged with genocide, while the rest concern persecution, extermination, murders, deportations, forcible transfer of population, illegal attacks on civilians and the taking of international hostages.

These crimes, qualified as crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war, were committed in 15 municipalities throughout BiH.

Last month, some media reported that the health of Mladic - who has had a stroke and has been unable to fully able to follow the trial due to his serious health condition - had further deteriorated. Because of this, Mladic's legal representatives, as well as his family, asked the Serbian government to send guarantees to the tribunal and enable his treatment in Serbia.
