Kern, who arrived here on Thursday evening, was welcomed in a ceremony in front of the Palace of Serbia, where the two heads of government later held a meeting.

They are due to address reporters.

Vucic organized an informal dinner for Kern last night, when they spoke about bilateral relations, the migrant crisis, and the situation in the region.

Ahead of the visit, the Austrian chancellor said he wished to deepen the good relations between the two countries, and would discuss with is hosts strengthening of economic cooperation, continued cooperation on suppressing illegal migrations, and Serbia moving closer to the EU.

"I am convinced that Serbia is a stable country and that there are significant possibilities for improving our relations," he told Tanjug.

Serbia's EU accession is very significant for Austria as we consider Serbia a natural partner of the EU, Kern said, adding that his country is an advocate of Serbia's interests that is backing a continuation of its accession process.

Concrete steps are required, Kern told the agency, expressing the hope that opening of further chapters in Serbia's accession talks would soon be possible.

Positive development and peace in the region are in Vucic's interest, he said, describing his host as a "level-headed, consistent politician" with whom he would discuss, above all, economic topics.

While in Belgrade, Kern will also be received by President Tomislav Nikolic.

The Austrian chancellor is planned to meet with representatives of Austrian companies doing business in Serbia.
